Office of Legal Counsel (OLC)

Component of Department of Education

About this agency

The Office of Legal Counsel prepares the formal opinions of the Attorney General and renders informal opinions and advice on questions of law to the various executive agencies and to other components of the Department of Justice. Records maintained include those relating to the administration of the office. Please be advised that the Office of Legal Counsel is a very small component with a specific function within the Department of Justice, and OLC's FOIA staff only processes requests for OLC records.  Ms. Golden is the FOIA Public Liaison for OLC, and not for the Department of Justice as a whole.  For guidance on where to send non-OLC FOIA requests, please visit the Office of Information Policy's Answers to Frequently Asked Questions . In addition to releasing documents through FOIA requests, OLC publishes many of its formal opinions, which can be found at https://www.justice.gov/olc/opinions-main .  FOIA Reference Guide FOIA Regulations
