Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR)

Component of Department of Education

About this agency

The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is a separate component within the U.S. Department of Justice.  OPR’s jurisdiction is limited to investigating allegations of professional misconduct against Department attorneys, such as Division Trial Attorneys, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, Attorney-Advisors, and Department management.   OPR may investigate a matter if the alleged misconduct occurs in the course of the attorney’s investigation, litigation, or providing legal advice.  In some circumstances, OPR also has the authority to investigate allegations of misconduct against Department law enforcement personnel.  If you are requesting documents related to your federal criminal case, you should submit your request to the Department’s Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys. If you are requesting documents related to allegations of Department waste, fraud, or abuse, you should submit your request to the Department’s Office of the Inspector General.  If you are requesting documents related to your application for employment to the Department’s Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), including documents related to your background check, you should submit your request to BOP. If you are requesting documents related to your application for employment to the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), or U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), including documents related to your background check, you should submit your request to ICE, TSA, or CBP.  Each of these Offices have their own Office of Professional Responsibility.
